National Retailer Reduces Energy Costs and Avoids Premium Utility Pricing.

National Retailer Reduces Energy Costs and Avoids Premium Utility Pricing.

The opportunity

A national specialty retailer sought to improve energy procurement and identify savings opportunities across its extensive portfolio of locations.

The company had been working with a large energy services provider whose primary focus was bill processing and payment. As a result, competitive energy procurement had received limited attention despite the size and geographic diversity of the retailer’s portfolio.

With only a small number of third-party supply agreements in place, the organization had an opportunity to take a more proactive approach to energy purchasing. Tradition Energy was engaged to evaluate individual markets, identify competitive supply opportunities, and establish a strategy focused on reducing costs and improving budget certainty.

Analysis

Tradition reviewed the retailer’s existing energy portfolio and identified a significant gap between the attention given to bill management and the strategic management of energy supply. The analysis revealed numerous markets where accounts had not been competitively sourced and were paying premiums on default utility service.

Despite the retailer’s large footprint, only two third-party supply contracts were in place. This indicated that competitive procurement opportunities had not been consistently evaluated across the broader portfolio.

Tradition identified nearly a dozen markets where locations remained on default utility service at premium pricing. Each market was evaluated individually to determine where competitive supply could provide a financial advantage

Rather than applying a single procurement approach nationwide, Tradition developed market-specific recommendations based on available pricing, market conditions, and the retailer’s budget objectives. This created a more disciplined framework for addressing previously overlooked locations.

The Result:
Savings, Cost Avoidance & Budget Security

Multi-Market Savings

Tradition identified and captured competitive procurement opportunities across multiple markets that had previously received limited attention, reducing energy costs across eligible locations.

Significant Cost Avoidance

Proactive market evaluation helped the retailer move away from premium utility pricing where competitive alternatives provided greater value, avoiding unnecessary future energy costs.

Greater Budget Security

A more structured procurement strategy provided improved visibility and cost certainty across the portfolio, replacing a largely passive approach with ongoing market monitoring and proactive energy management.
