Grand Prairie ISD Projects Over $3 Million in Savings Through Strategic Energy Procurement

The opportunity

Grand Prairie ISD sought to reduce energy risk, simplify 53 electricity contracts, and improve long-term budget certainty.

Grand Prairie ISD, a Texas school district with 43 campuses and more than 35,000 students and faculty, had maintained a long-standing relationship with its existing energy broker. While the District had recently lowered its electricity costs, those savings came through a high-risk product with unfavorable contractual terms.

Compounding the challenge, the District’s electricity portfolio was governed by more than 50 individual contracts with separate terms and conditions. Seeking a more strategic approach to energy procurement and risk management, Grand Prairie ISD evaluated approximately eight companies, including energy suppliers, before selecting Tradition Energy as its energy advisor.

Analysis

Tradition restructured the District’s electricity agreements to reduce risk, simplify contract management, and identify significant future savings opportunities.

Tradition worked directly with Grand Prairie ISD’s incumbent electricity supplier to renegotiate its existing agreements and eliminate 53 individual contracts. This process addressed unfavorable contractual provisions and the complexities associated with managing multiple agreements across the District’s facilities.

Tradition then negotiated a new electricity product and consolidated the District’s accounts under a single master agreement with the incumbent supplier. The new structure established fixed rates for RUC, congestion, line losses, and ancillary costs for the remaining contract term, eliminating exposure to fluctuations in these cost components.

Beyond restructuring the existing agreements, Tradition conducted a strategic procurement analysis that identified additional cost-reduction opportunities for future electricity purchases. The resulting approach was designed to strengthen budget certainty, improve contract management, and position Grand Prairie ISD for substantial long-term savings.

The Result:
Lower Risk, Significant Savings

Over $3 Million in Projected Savings

Tradition’s strategic procurement recommendations positioned Grand Prairie ISD to achieve more than $600,000 in projected annual savings and over $3 million over the future contract term , delivering meaningful financial value for the District.

53 Electricity Contracts Consolidated

Tradition successfully consolidated 53 individual electricity agreements into a single master contract, eliminating unfavorable terms and establishing fixed pricing for key cost components. This simplified contract administration while significantly reducing the District’s exposure to variable electricity costs.

Ongoing Utility Account Support

Tradition’s involvement extended beyond contract negotiations and procurement. The team continues to support Grand Prairie ISD’s accounts payable department by addressing billing concerns and utility-related issues, providing ongoing assistance throughout the relationship.
