National Beverage Distributor Identifies 20%+ Potential Natural Gas Savings

The opportunity

A national beverage distributor sought to consolidate energy procurement and identify savings opportunities across more than 70 U.S. sites.

Introduced through OMNIA Partners and LogicSource, the company was managing energy procurement through multiple brokers across its extensive national footprint. This fragmented approach created an opportunity to centralize purchasing, improve consistency, and leverage the organization’s combined scale more effectively.

In addition to reducing electricity and natural gas costs, the company wanted to evaluate sustainability and energy efficiency opportunities across its facilities. Tradition Energy was engaged to prioritize markets where immediate financial impact could be achieved while developing a broader strategy for procurement and sustainability initiatives.

Analysis

Tradition evaluated the company’s national portfolio and initially focused on deregulated markets where competitive procurement could deliver the greatest immediate value. The review identified opportunities in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Illinois, while additional natural gas and sustainability initiatives were evaluated across the broader portfolio.

Tradition identified significant cost exposure at the company’s largest Illinois load, where an expired agreement had resulted in punitive post-contractual pricing. Addressing the account became an immediate priority while establishing a more proactive approach to future contract management.

Beyond immediate savings, Tradition evaluated changing market conditions and rising capacity costs in PJM. This shifted portions of the strategy toward cost avoidance, with procurement decisions in Illinois and Washington, D.C., designed to reduce exposure to anticipated increases.

Tradition’s Renewables team evaluated energy efficiency and sustainability opportunities across the company’s facilities, including a potential Illinois solar project. While that project was ultimately not pursued, the analysis established a framework for continued evaluation of renewable, efficiency, and natural gas opportunities.

The Result:
Consolidated Procurement & Cost Control

Multi-Market Electricity Strategy

Tradition procured electricity agreements for facilities in Maryland, Washington, D.C., and Illinois, replacing fragmented purchasing with a more coordinated approach across key deregulated markets.

Reduced Cost Exposure

The strategy addressed costly post-contractual pricing while helping protect the company against rising capacity costs and other market pressures, improving long-term budget management.

20%+ Gas Savings Potential

Tradition continues to evaluate natural gas opportunities across several markets where current analysis indicates the potential for savings exceeding 20%, while also advancing energy efficiency opportunities across the broader portfolio.
